Why Plant-Based Eating Matters

PowerUp focuses on improving the health of kids, families and our community. And including plant protein is part of that!

The food we eat not only has an effect on our health and well-being, but the health and well-being of our planet as well. We know that plant-based protein sources, such as beans, lentils, soy, nuts and seeds are good for:

  • The planet. Plant-based protein sources have a lower carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, require much less land and water to produce, and make much less waste and pollution compared to animal-based protein sources.
  • Our health. Plant-based protein sources are high in fiber, rich in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Including them in our diet can have health-promoting and protective effects.
  • Grocery budgets. Plant-based protein sources have a longer shelf life and are often much less expensive than animal-based protein sources.

Not to mention, plant proteins can be used in so many ways and taste great! Making small changes to include them in your meals or snacks can make a big difference, no matter what your reason might be.
