PowerUp with the Try for 5 School Challenge!

What is the Try for 5 School Challenge?

  • The Try for 5 School Challenge is a free program offered to elementary schools throughout the St. Croix Valley and Metro areas. It encourages students and staff to "try" eating 5 fruits and veggies every day‚Ķespecially by eating a variety of different colors. The challenge is used to create a school environment that makes eating better exciting and fun! This year, 60 schools are participating.

How does School Challenge Work?

  • The Kick-off: The Try for 5 School Challenge kicks off with a fun classroom presentation. The PowerUp team leads the students through a taste test of 5 different fruits and veggies. Each student has the opportunity to try something new and vote on their favorites! This year, students are trying a green bean, a cherry tomato, a sweet potato, purple cabbage, and cauliflower.

  • Students try special brain boosters, get fun posters and prizes, and receive our activity-filled PowerUp Magazine, available for download in English and Spanish.

  • For three weeks, students use trackers in the classrooms to track their fruit and veggie consumption at school. If the school meets their goal, they win wellness dollars to use towards new gym equipment or other fun prizes!
