What are PowerUp Bucks and how does my school earn them?

The PowerUp School Challenge is a super cool way to make eating more fruits and veggies fun, while also earning PowerUp Bucks for your school!

PowerUp Bucks are earned based on the overall school challenge participation level and your school's health environment. The higher the participation and score on the School Change survey, the more PowerUp Bucks your school can earn. Schools can earn up to $1,100!

PowerUp Bucks can only be used for wellness supplies, materials or equipment that help promote better eating and physical activity in kids during and after the school day. They may be used to purchase “permanent” items only, not “one time use” items.

Examples:
  • Snack carts for fruits/veggies (but not the consumable snacks)
  • Balls, games or equipment for active games or recess (but not prizes for students)
  • A salad bar or food service equipment (but not food itself)
  • Nutrition/physical activity curriculum or staff training that can be reused (not worksheets alone)

What is a PowerUp Fruit and Veggie Tracker?

The PowerUp Tracker is a fun and simple tracking tool to help kids count how many fruits and vegetables they eat each day, over the 3-week Challenge. Each school day, teachers will spend 5-10 minutes with students tracking the number of fruits and veggies they eat (Monday-Friday).

Trackers will stay at school.

Why is tracking important?
Tracking is important because it helps kids get excited about fruits and veggies while Trying for 5! Your school will also earn PowerUp bucks based on how many students in the classroom turn in their completed trackers. To learn more about PowerUp Bucks go to: powerup4kids.org/schoolchallenge and click the PowerUp Bucks tab.

When/What should I have my students track?

Students will record all of the fruits and veggies they eat throughout the school day, including breakfast. If the student wants to record the fruits and veggies they ate at home that’s okay, too.  Although, this is not required because we know it can sometimes be hard for kids (and adults) to remember what they ate the day before.

Will families be contacted during the Challenge?

No. Instead, your child will bring home a fun-filled Power Pack Family Magazine, bursting with many family-fun, kid-friendly activities, recipes and resources to help your family PowerUp with plenty of colorful and tasty fruits and veggies. Families may also receive fun and helpful fruit/veggie and Challenge information from their child’s teacher or school during the 3-week challenge.

Does this event cost anything for my school?
No. The PowerUp School Challenge is completely FREE for participating schools, teachers and students.
